KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Being an employee, you need to make sure that you know exactly what you are legally obligated to do, what you can say no, and what you deserve. All of these can be complicated as it is relative to your work placement. But understanding your rights and responsibilities is extremely important as there most likely will be times in your career/part-time job where you are in a situation that you should not be in. For example, you are not getting paid enough, or you are working too much. As an employee, you want to only achieve greatness and evolve in your career...this will not happen if you are taken advantage of.

It does not hurt to ask your employer any questions you have as that is normal and necessary for learning experiences. Have you heard of overtime pay? If so do you know how much ti is or how many hours a week you need to work for it to count as overtime? What about time in lieu? These are necessary terms to know as you may encounter yourself in a position where they affect you and your earnings. Have you heard of the 11 hour rule? You should know it! Especially if you work in the restaurant business it will come in handy! There will be many situations in our careers where we will need to know our rights to either stand up for ourselves or our colleague. Our rights and responsibilities are also constantly changing and updating so you need to make sure you keep up to date with the current laws and regulations. Every job has different rights and responsibilities, do not be shy to ask someone for clarification, do not let someone take advantage of you, and do understand the importance of being knowledgeable of such issues.
